True Worth
True Worth

Knowing and accepting our true worth can be something that unfortunately we find quite difficult.

We often settle for believing and being treated like we are worth far less that we are.

We find it so easy to listen to that little voice inside our head that says we are not enough. Or to believe the lies that social media, TV, movies, and others tell us we need to look like, or act like to be worth something.

We believe the marketing campaigns that unless we have that certain phone, handbag, car, clothes etc we don’t matter. We believe the beauty campaigns that say we have to look a certain way to be worth anything.

We think that if we don’t have love, acceptance or even interest from the opposite sex we are less valuable.

Our worth can take some heavy hits from things that shouldn’t be involved with our worth at all.

It is not affected by what we do, what we have, who we know, where we live, what school we go to, what friends we have or anything else.

Our worth is in Christ.

So, let’s see what he says about our worth.

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex.

Psalm 139: 13

You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion…you saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book.

Psalm 130: 15-16

The first thing to remember is that you are not here by accident. You have been deliberately and uniquely thought of and created by God himself. God took great care in not just thinking of you but knitting you together, of watching you as you were safely in your mother’s womb. He saw you before you were born, and he continues to see you every day of your life.

God is the creator of the universe, he created everything we see today. Do you really think anything he creates can honestly be called ‘worthless?

You have been created by the creator.

You were beyond valuable before you drew your first breath. Throughout your life this value, your worth never decreases.

The Bible teaches us that we sin, that we all disobey God (Romans 3:23 “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard”.)we have broken that perfect relationship man once had with God in the very beginning.

And yet, God says we are still incredibly valuable to him. So much so he sent Jesus.

Maybe you struggle with believing that. Maybe you even think that your past or your mistakes have made you worthless.

To best explain this, I am going to use a well know illustration that you have maybe heard of before.

Imagine a £20 note. Who would like to be given a £20 note? I think all of us would accept it very thankfully.

How much is this note worth? £20 obviously.

Now imagine if someone took that £20 note and crumbled it into a ball. Would you still want it? Of course, it’s still worth £20.

What if they then took it and stamped on it? Would you want it then? How much would it be worth? Still £20.

You see no matter what happened to the £20 note we would still want it because it’s value never changed. It was still worth the same.

That’s how God see’s us. We sin, the Bible says that sin is filthy and evil (James 1:21) and God hates sin because it separates us from him. It keeps us away from a God who loves us. But it doesn’t affect how he loves us; it doesn’t affect our value or worth to him. As I said before we see this so clearly in him sending Jesus.

For God bought you with a high price. So, you must honour God with your body

1 Corinthians 6:20

…And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.

James 1:18

We are God’s prized possession, out of everything that we created, everything here on earth we are his most prized possession.

Do you see it yet? Do you see how valuable you are? How much your life is worth to God?

He created you.

He knew you before you were born.

You are his prized possession.

This isn’t dependent on what you achieve, on what you look like, on what friends you have or don’t have. This is simple how God values you.

Your worth doesn’t come under a price tag. No amount could cover it, the only thing that could was Jesus’ life. Jesus the perfect son of God. That’s your worth.

Write those verses down, have them memorized and the next time you feel your worth being attacked, speak them out, go to them in your Bible. Fight the lie with the amazing truth God has given us. And remember your true worth comes from him.
